Size Doesn’t Matter. Right.

I’m fairly convinced that the fashion industry intentionally tries to confuse women. Why else would I wear anything from a size two to six? I have the very same body – nothing magical happens in the dressing room. As far as I know.

I went shopping on Saturday for a new pair of skinny jeans. I lost count of how many different pairs of jeans I tried on in sizes from two to six. It was frustrating – and I walked out with no jeans. I’ll keep looking, but honestly I’m not looking forward to it. I have a pair of skinny jeans that fit really well, but Old Navy doesn’t sell that particular style anymore.

Men have it so easy. A large is a large, no matter what brand. They have standard sizes – no real surprises. I can buy my husband a large shirt and be confident it will fit him perfectly. Therein lies the challenge. And frustration. And, as I recently put it, the GRRRRRRR factor. Don’t even get me started on swimsuits.

So, I continue my search for a pair of skinny jeans that fits well – no bunching at the crotch or knees, no sagging butt or gapping waist. Oh, and just the right length for my 5’4” height. I don’t think it’s an unreasonable request. If you know of a great brand of skinnies I should try, please let me know! I’ll post photos when my quest is complete.

Frugally yours,

Saturday Wear

I tried something new the other day. I know I’ve been a little scarf crazy lately, and while I wanted to wear a scarf with this outfit, I felt it needed a little something extra. I put the necklace with the scarf and went for a “judgment call” to one of my stylishly savvy daughters. Miss D gave it her seal of approval and patiently endured my “are you sure it isn’t too much?” and “do you really like it?” questions. Yes, even frugalistas second guess their style choices occasionally!

I wore this particular ensemble to do my Saturday afternoon running around. It was comfortable (definitely a must for Saturday-wear) and colorful so I felt good in it all day. The weather was nice enough that I didn’t need a jacket, so my layers worked well. I had a couple of random people tell me they liked my outfit, so I would deem it a success!

Today’s outfit:

Teal T-shirt: Target
Cardigan Sweater: Forever 21
Jeans: Target
Scarf: Ross
Necklace: J Crew Outlet
Cowboy boots: Justin Boot Outlet, Justin, Texas

Sample Sales

There are many ways to find bargains prices on the latest fashions. The normal spots are outlet malls, Ross, Marshalls and TJ Maxx, but there are alternative shopping options as well. Take for example the “Sample Sale”. Although I don’t see these pop up as often as I used to, they do exist. A Sample Sale is usually held in someone’s home and features samples (naturally) from wholesale clothing suppliers. In this area, Dallas Market Center (DMC) holds four Apparel Markets per year which are open to Retailers only. I know it’s early, but November 8-10, 2013 DMC will hold its annual Dallas Sample Sale. You can get more details here: It’s a great way to do some early Christmas shopping, but also a fabulous opportunity to get the latest fashions at wholesale prices. They also have jewelry, toys, children’s clothing, accessories, home furnishings and more.

I’ve also found some great deals at Cabi Fashions end of season sales. If you know a Cabi representative, ask to be put on the mailing list for their sales. The clothes are great quality and made for “real” women. You can check out the current catalog here: Cabi is great for those clothing staples that are the foundation of any wardrobe. I have a black knit blazer I purchased at an end of season sale for about $40 and it’s been a great go to item.

News Flash! I just discovered a store called “Sample This” at Mockingbird Station in Dallas ( I found it through a Google search for “sample sales” and will be checking it out this weekend. I don’t think they have a full website, but I talked to the owner, Judy on the phone and she sounds very nice. I’ll let you know what I find!

Today’s outfit is a great example of a “Sample Sale” find. The multicolored sweater is one of my favorites this season and I’ve worn it on many occasions – and always receive compliments! I love the fun combination of colors – it goes with so many different things.

Today’s Outfit:

Multi-Color Sweater: Sample Sale
Brown t-shirt: Walmart
Skinny Jeans: Old Navy
Brown Boots: Ross
Earrings: Lori Yeary Designs

Style Mysteries

It wasn’t too long ago that I looked in my closet and thought “I am so tired of everything in here”!! I have a good amount of clothing choices, but everything looked bland and boring to my eyes that day. Nothing interesting or exciting. Definitely not a good day. I’m sure you’ve been there too. At least once or twice.

What do I do when in have “nothing to wear”? I can’t always go shopping, so I’ve learned to shop my closet. You read that right. Shop your closet! I usually start on Pinterest. Between my personal style boards and the new things that pop up every day, I can usually find one or two outfits that feature items already in my closet. It’s amazing what a difference just changing a few details will make in an outfit!

One of my favorite things to do is help other people realize the potential that’s already in their closet. If you would like some help restyling your wardrobe let me know! Style Savvy DFW was created to do exactly that. We’ll spend some time going through what you have, create outfits (including shoes and accessories), take photos of the outfits and then decide together what stays and what goes. Then we’ll make a shopping list so you can shop at your leisure (and according to your budget!).

Email me at I’ll send you more details and a list of our services. I can’t wait to hear from you!

Today’s outfit 2 ways! I decided to show this outfit with and without the scarf. Accessories DO make a difference! Black v-neck sweater: Old Navy/Teal skinny jeans:Kohl’s/Scarf: Target/Flat black boots: DSW

Fashionably yours,

No Rules

I don’t really have any hard and fast fashion rules. I know what I like, and most of the time I know what looks good on me. When in doubt I snap a photo with my iPhone and send it to one of my daughters. They are my fashion police and I appreciate their opinions. Sometimes it’s a little frustrating – recently I tried on a dress I really liked and got a thumbs down. Twice. Both girls made very valid points about the dress, and in retrospect I can see they were right.

It’s always good to get an honest second opinion. I can always tell if an outfit is successful by the feedback I get from my girls. I love that they are so honest with me! They have very often saved me from making some unfortunate purchases. No “old lady” clothes for me! A couple of years ago the three of us were shopping after watching TLC’s “What Not To Wear”. The girls were doing their best Stacy and Clinton imitations as we looked at clothes, gently (and not so gently) steering me clear of not so good choices. A lady walked by and said “can I borrow your daughters?” We all laughed, but I realized then the value of a second (and third) opinion when it comes to establishing your style.

The next time you go clothes shopping, take a friend along! If you must shop alone, don’t hesitate to “phone a friend”. A good friend will tell you honestly if those jeans make your butt look big, or that sweater isn’t the best color for you. Even the most stylish women occasionally suffer from “fashion blindness”. A second opinion is, in my view, a girls best friend.

Stylishly yours,

P.S. Today’s outfit is a perfect example. This is the first time I’ve worm the maxi skirt, so the decision on which boots to wear was important. I changed boots three times until B and I found a pair that looked right!

Black maxi skirt – Cato
Black and white striped t-shirt – Forever 21
Jean jacket – GAP (borrowed from my daughter’s closet – thanks, D!)
Red infinity scarf – gift
Belt – Target
