One of those days

2.14.15

I knew it would happen. Just when I was getting a little spring fever. The weather turned cold. Again. It was so cold this morning I had to take my photos super quick. No time to fuss with the scarf or battle the wind. It’s supposed to warm up this weekend, then cool down again. Welcome to the Texas weather roller coaster. I have every confidence we’ll warm up soon enough. Then I’ll start pulling out my spring and summer clothes for a wardrobe review. Stay tuned…

Today’s Outfit:

Mossimo tunic sweater: Target
Denim leggings: GAP Outlet
Diba brown leather boots: DSW
Scarf: Target

Have a lovely, healthy day!

Conundrum

2.13.14

Days like today bring quite a conundrum. It’s still fairly cool, but warmed up to almost 70. And it’s also February so I can’t bring myself to break out the spring colors. Yet. Something in my internal clock just can’t make the leap to spring clothes until at least March. I guess I’d be in trouble if I lived in California or Florida – I’d be in a constant state of quandary. It’s a good thing I live in Texas, I guess.

Today’s Outfit:

Mossimo teal sweater: Target
Jordache light brown denim skinny jeans: Walmart
Merona leopard pumps: Target
Necklace and earrings: Charming Charlie

Have a lovely, healthy day!

Blue Suede Shoes

Blue Suede ShoesThis outfit brought me luck today. And lots of comments about my blue booties. And it was comfortable as well, which made the day even better. Add to that a warm 75 degrees and I just wanted to spend the day walking outside. Fortunately I was able to spend at least a little time walking around the always interesting McKinney Square. It made the time I had to spend inside a little more bearable. Spring fever is creeping up on me in a big way…

Today’s outfit:

Grey cotton sweater: Old Navy
Blue tank top: H&M USA
Denim leggings: GAP Outlet
Diba blue suede booties: DSW (find them here)
Necklace and earrings: Charming Charlie

Have a lovely, healthy day!

Orange Loveliness

Orange loveliness

I found this top at a sample sale. Loved it so much I bought it in several colors. Then went back and bought two more. Crazy, I know, but seriously it’s the most comfortable top I’ve ever worn. It’s a lightweight knit, so I’ll be able to wear it pretty much year round. I’ve found a boutique in Fort Worth that will be carrying them, and when their website is up and running you’ll be the first to know! I’ve seen similar at JollyChic.com and ModCloth.com if you want to start looking now. I promise I’ll let you know when I see them pop up anywhere!

Today’s outfit:

Knit tunic: Sample Sale (similar herehere and here)
Denim leggings: GAP Outlet
Moda Leopard booties: DSW
Necklace and earrings: Charming Charlie

Black and Blue

2.8.15

Sometimes it’s all about the shoes. Like today, for example. I really wanted to wear these amazing blue booties, so I created the outfit around the shoes. Am I the only one who does that?? Probably not. I didn’t want an overabundance of color, so I went with a neutral sweater and jeans with the pop of blue in the scarf to tie (no pun intended) it all together. I had at least four people comment on the shoes while I was out shopping, so I would say I was right. It needed to be a blue suede shoe day.

Today’s outfit:

White Stag black turtleneck sweater: Walmart
Jordache dark denim leggings: Walmart
Diba blue suede booties: DSW
Scarf: Target
Eyeglasses: Zenni Optical (find them here)

Have a lovely, healthy day!

Purple Haze

2.5.15Well, here are the grey jeans again. Seriously, I think they’re just as versatile as regular blue denim. And they’ll be great as we move into Spring. Can’t you see them with Yellow, Green, and Pink? Oh, and Blue. And white lace. Or a coral blazer. Sandals, flats, even a cute white (maybe dotted?) oxford shoe. The mind reels with possibilities…

Today’s outfit:

Merona purple turtleneck sweater: Target
Jordache skinny jeans: Walmart
Bandolino black riding boots: DSW
Scarf: Target

Have a lovely, healthy day!

My Journey – Part Six

2.7.15

Texas weather is frequently a roller coaster affair. Especially in winter. Seriously – we can have high temperatures in the 30s one and and in the 60s 24 hours later. I’ve learned to keep varying types of clothes handy – yes, that means lightweight fabrics and heavy sweaters in the same closet. Today’s outfit was perfect for last week’s high of 65 degrees just my leather jacket in the morning, but none needed by 3:00pm. Craziness. It looks like our weather is starting the trek to Spring, so I may be phasing out sweaters and boots before too long. That is, until Winter decide to rear its frosty head for one last blast. It’s happened before. In March…

Now more on the journey…

It’s always a little funny when people ask how I lost my weight. I guess they expect me to say I took some kind of pills or drank weird concoctions – basically a quick fix. When my answer is “diet and exercise” I actually got some weird looks. There are also those who smile, nod and said “exactly”. The honest truth is, it was hard work. Hard. Work. I had to commit totally to the process and set my mind on solid, realistic goals. I did not lose 5 or 10 pounds a week. I think the most I ever lost in one week was 4 pounds. Then I promptly gained back two pounds the next week. There were a lot of days I wanted to just give up and dive face first into a pint of ice cream. Or eat a bag of potato chips. But then I would look in the mirror. REALLY look. And see obvious changes in my body. And I’d get back on track. It took a total of 10 months to lose 30 pounds and I can honestly say every moment was worth it. I’ve made changes that I believe will take me through the rest of my life to be healthy, happy and fit. I want to be waterskiing when I’m 80 years old! If I can do it, so can you. Yes. You can.

Today’s outfit:

Merona black dotted shirt: Target
Jordache skinny jeans: Walmart
Comfort Plus red pumps: Payless Shoe Source
Red necklace: Sam Moon Trading
Gold chains: LYDesigns

My Journey – Part Five

2.3.15

A sweater like this one is just the right thing for a foggy, rainy day. The grey and yellow brightened up my day nicely and the flowers were just the hint of Spring I needed. I’m having fun with grey combinations – stay tuned for more fun match-ups!

Now more on the journey…

To answer some of your questions, today I’ll talk about the diet portion of my journey. As I mentioned earlier, I started my diet in January of 2012 with a 21 day cleanse. I used the Standard Process program which combined natural supplements with a specific diet of fresh fruits, vegetables, lean proteins and lots of water. I had already eliminated caffeine, aspartame and diet sodas, so I started drinking green tea and using natural sweeteners (Stevia and honey). I also limited my alcohol intake – just for special occasions. I replaced ice cream with frozen yogurt and made smoothies every morning for breakfast (frozen fruit and water, no juice or milk). After the cleanse I stuck to 1200 calories a day, adjusting my calories to compensate for any I burned during exercise. It was a tricky balance, but it paid off. All in all it took about 10 months to lose the 30 pounds. And I can guarantee you every single day was worth it. Now I still adhere to the 1200 calories a day and log everything I eat in the My Fitness Pal app. With continuing my diet and exercise I’ve kept the weight off (at least 25 pounds of it) and feel better than I did in my 40s. Life is good!

Today’s outfit:

Merona grey flowered sweater: Target
Mustard turtleneck knit top: CATO
Jordache denim leggings: Walmart
Bandolino black riding boots: DSW

My Journey – Part Four

2.2.15

Today’s outfit was surprisingly easy to put together. When I found the grey Jordache Jeans at Walmart a couple of months ago, there was no question they were coming home with me. If Jordache would add more colors this Spring you’d probably see me dancing in the street. I love it when I can walk in, find my size and KNOW they’ll fit. Every time. Fashion Kismet? I think so. The striped T-shirt is a newish addition. I found it on my birthday shopping trip at H&M USA. Comfortable, affordable and pretty darn cute. I’d say it’s a style trifecta!

Now more on the journey…

You’ve all been so kind in your comments – it’s been a huge encouragement to me this week! If this series accomplishes just one thing, I hope it’s to spur you to make positive changes NOW. Don’t wait until you’re five years down the road to lose that weight, get more active or eat healthier. Now is the time! In all honesty, I didn’t think I could lose 30 pounds (my diet history didn’t do much to help), but once I started seeing the pounds come if it was definitely easier. I increased my activity level by adding walking, then running to my routine. The running thing was the biggest change for me – I was never a runner. Never. But a friend challenged me to do a 5k with her, so I signed up for the “Couch to 5k” program and ran my first race in October of 2012. I then ran two more 5k races – exceeding my own goal! It was at this point I knew I had changed my life forever.

Someone asked what I did will all my larger sized clothes – well here’s how I approached that… As I lost pounds (and inches) I was delighted to find that my clothes were getting looser. I also knew I didn’t have a ton of money to replace my wardrobe all at once. While it was very tempting to by a bunch of things when I went from a size 12/14 to and 8/10, I knew I was going to lose more (hope springs eternal, after all!), so I elected to have some of my nicer things tailored. The trick with tailoring is you really can’t take a shirt, pants or skirt down more than one size. I picked a few things and had them taken in, then just worked with what I had. It worked for awhile until I went down to a size 6. Fortunately that was at the end of the summer, so I could add some fall and winter things slowly (and economically). The biggest shock was when I went to put on my (size 10) winter coat and found it literally swallowed me! I was fortunate to find one (size SMALL) on sale and have been wearing it ever since. Once I got to the point of no return I started giving away all my larger sized clothes. I was determined not to keep a “back-up” wardrobe! Out they went to charities and friends. With my wholehearted blessing.

Today’s outfit:

Black striped T-shirt: H&M USA
Jordache grey skinny jeans: Walmart
Anne Klein grey booties: DSW
Scarf: Target

Have a lovely, healthy day!
