My Journey – Part Three

1.30.15a

I think one of the things that helped me keep going during my weight loss journey was setting goals. Once I saw that the dieting and exercise was working I decided to challenge myself. I set two very specific (and up to that point unthinkable) goals: Learn to slalom waterski (one ski) and run a 5k race. I learned to waterski (2 skies) when I was in college and had tried unsuccessfully to get up on one ski several times. I always felt overweight and uncoordinated in previous attempts, so just quit trying. Now I had reason to think I could do it. I was improving my physical fitness every time I got on the treadmill or elliptical machine, and eating a healthier diet was making me feel better and better every day. By June I had lost almost 20 pounds! When we left for our annual vacation at Table Rock Lake in Missouri I was feeling pretty confident I would get up on slalom. And I did! It was much easier than I thought, and you can bet I had a huge smile on my face that entire week. I felt good, looked good and it was at point I realized – I could never go back to way I was before. I made the commitment to myself (and AH) that this was a permanent change. It didn’t mean there wouldn’t be challenges or setbacks, but this was a course I was determined to stay on for the rest of my life.

I hope it’s ok if I continue this story for another couple of days. I didn’t realize how good it would feel to share it with y’all…

Today’s outfit:

Converse grey cotton sweater: Target
Jordache skinny jeans: Walmart
Exhileration grey flats: Target
Jewelry: LYDesigns
You might have noticed my black “bracelet”. It’s the FitBit AH bought me for Christmas!

Have a lovely, healthy day!

My Journey – Part Two

1.29.15a

Thanks to everyone who commented about yesterdays post. I’m sure there are many others who resonated with what I said, so I’ll continue my story today…

When I started my diet I set some goals. My public goal was to lose 20 pounds. My secret goal was 25 pounds. My super secret-didn’t tell anyone goal was 30 pounds. I didn’t want to tell anyone my “real” goal because I was afraid of failure. Can anyone relate? I’d gone on so many diets before only to give up after a week or two. I wasn’t going to risk looking like an idiot when I failed, yet again. So I quietly went on this journey with only AH (awesome husband) as a cheerleader.

In the first two months of my diet and exercise program, I have to admit there were many times I thought about just giving up. Not going to lie. It. Was. Hard. I was tempted just about every day to eat a pint of ice cream, eat a cheeseburger and fries, anything but eat what I KNEW I should be eating. Healthy, good for me food. Then I would look in the mirror or try on some now too big clothes and change my mind. Again. It’s really amazing the difference just 10 pounds will make. And fortunately it was enough to keep me going.

As I lost weight I found I had more energy and increase my workouts to 6 (sometimes 7) days a week. A very dedicated Sunday afternoon napper, I even started forgoing my weekly nap in favor of going to the gym. Believe me, AH thought I had lost my mind the first few weeks. It became habit, and eventually I missed it when I didn’t workout. It was weird, really. I could feel myself changing inside as well as out. I had a little more confidence and began setting other goals. But more about that tomorrow…

Today’s outfit:
Blue cotton sweater: Old Navy
Jordache skinny jeans: Walmart
Tahari black and brown oxford shoes: DSW
Scarf: Target

Have a lovely, healthy day!

My Journey

No outfit photo today. Today I’m going to share some of my weight loss journey. In all honesty, I’ve put this off because I didn’t want to bore you with my story. But so many of you have asked, I figured it might be time.

In 2011 I was overweight, borderline depressed and feeling like I was powerless to do anything about it. The photo below was taken just right before Christmas that year. I look at it now (it’s the wallpaper on my phone) it reminds me that I have a choice every day. Never. To. Go. Back. I started my diet on January 1, 2012 with a 21 day Standard Process cleanse. I figured there was a lot of junk in my system so I want to start with a clean slate. I had already quit drinking sodas (even diet sodas), eliminated Aspartame and switched to decaf coffee, so I was off to a good start.

While I was on the cleanse I researched many different diet plans and determined that sticking to a specific eating plan was going to be difficult. I discovered the My Fitness Pal app for iPhone and started counting calories. I decided on 1200 calories a day with an emphasis on more protein and less sugar. In other words, I wanted to eat healthier. For the first couple of months I pretty much eliminated breads and starches, then gradually added them back in. I also started exercising, which for me was huge. I’ve never been athletic, so I started with just walking on a treadmill. I joined a gym and committed to going at least 5 days a week. I took my workout clothes to work and changed before I left so I had no excuse not to go to the gym! At first I couldn’t do more than 30 minutes on the treadmill, but gradually worked my way up to 45 minutes, then an hour. The first time I got on the elliptical machine I thought I was going to pass out after only 3 minutes! But I stuck with it and eventually would alternate between the treadmill and elliptical. It took about 2 months to lose the first 10 pounds, but it didn’t get easier, trust me. But more about that, tomorrow…

Cool Blue X 2

1.26.15

Oh, blue. You are a star color for me and I love you. I guess it started with the first dress I remember my mother making for me. It was blue with purple flowers and was, in a word, twirly. Mom made most of my clothes until I was in junior high. She was an excellent seamstress and even designed and made my wedding dress. I sewed for my girls when they were young – and made my share of prom and homecoming dresses, but it was never really a passion for me. I prefer to buy my clothes ready-made, thank you very much!

This shirt was a surprise find at Talbot’s. I don’t normally shop there (it’s usually out of my price range), but stopped in to see what they had on sale. This shirt was 70% off. Yes, you read that right. I couldn’t resist, so I actually bought one in purple as well. And still paid less than the original price of one shirt! Gotta love that…

Have a lovely day!

What I wore:
Blue Blouse: Talbot’s
Jordache denim leggings: Walmart
Black leather boots: White House/Black Market
Jewelry: H&M USA
Blue eyeglasses: Zenni Optical

Frugally yours,

Lori

Cool Blue

1.28.15

Can you tell I love blue? There’s just something so happy when I wear blue, I’m a little surprised I don’t wear it more. This sweater in particular is one of my favorites. It’s cotton, so I can wear it just about all year (except in the Texas summer heat!) and it works with or without layers. I stay away from wool and acrylic sweaters when possible – it’s just not cold enough in Texas.

Have a lovely day!

What I wore:
Merona sweater: Target
Jordache skinny jeans: Walmart
Nine West black booties: DSW
Scarf: Target
Blue eyeglasses: Zenni Optical

Frugally yours,

Lori

Happy Birthday to ME!

2.23.15

Oh, Texas weather. You never know what you’re getting from one day to the next. Seriously – yesterday it was warm, today was cold and rainy. It’s like the weather doesn’t even know it’s January. But the good news is…

It’s my birthday! If you had told me the year I turned 50 that I would be celebrating my 56th birthday healthier, happier and more excited about life than ever I would have said you were crazy. When I turned 50 I was overweight, frustrated and borderline depressed. I really didn’t have much excitement about anything and couldn’t see a way out. It took me a couple of years, but in 2011 just before my 52nd birthday I decided to make some changes. Some pretty drastic changes. I determined to lose 30 pounds, learn to slalom waterski and run a 5k race. And I did it. It took 10 months of hard work, but I lost the 30 pounds and met all of my goals. It’s taken more hard work, but I’ve kept the weight off for almost 3 years. Which is a minor miracle, trust me.

The last 3 years have been an amazing adventure. I started writing this blog in 2012 and have been incredibly blessed by your response. I never imagined I would still be writing today – so thank you, from the bottom of my heart. Just last summer I started singing jazz – and I can’t even express how wonderful it’s been. I’ve made so many new friends, sung in some fun places with amazing musicians and had more fun than I believed possible. Life is really, really good.

Thank you for making this an amazing year. Y’all are wonderful!

Have a lovely day!

Striped long sleeve t-shirt: H&M USA

Purple Haze

Purple Haze

I found this sweater at the bottom of a drawer. How many times has this happened to you? You just forget you have something and then one day, there it is. I’m really glad I found it – it’s one of those cotton sweaters that is just right for the moderate weather we’ve been having. The scarf adds a bit of softness at my neck and works because it’s lightweight and not as bulky as some of my other ones. Layered necklaces would have worked as well, but with the heavier boots I liked the look of the scarf better. All in all, a comfortable, casual outfit.

Have a lovely day!

What I wore:
Merona Purple cotton sweater: Target
Blue tank top: H&M USA
Jordache skinny jeans: Walmart
White Mountain brown boots: DSW
Scarf: Sam Moon Trading
Blue Eyeglasses: Zenni Optical

Frugally yours,

Lori

Day Off

2.21.15

Have you ever wondered what I wear on my “days off”? Well, here it is. Yes, I wear tennis shoes. Converse, to be exact and they’re perfect for a day of running errands. No heels or boots on my day off – I go for comfort first. Normally I’d have my hair in a ponytail or messy twist, but I actually woke up to decent hair, so I just went with it. Yes, I wore a scarf, but hey, you have to admit this outfit would be pretty bland without it. And that’s one thing I can’t do – bland. Even on my day off…

Have a lovely day!

What I wore:
Grey cotton sweater: Old Navy
Pink tank top: The LOFT
Jordache skinny ankle jeans: Walmart
Converse Tennis Shoes: Converse Outlet
Scarf: Sam Moon Trading
Blue Eyeglasses: Zenni Optical

Frugally yours,

Lori

Symphony of Color

Color Symphony

Joseph had his coat of many colors. I have mine. This sweater never fails to make me happy – and garner questions of “where did you buy that?” I wish I could send you to a store or website, but I bought this beauty at a sample sale. Two years ago. It’s one of those rare pieces that I’ll probably never run across again – and seriously questioned whether or not to buy it at the time. I’m glad I did!

Have a lovely day!

What I wore:
Brown short sleeved turtleneck: CATO
Cotton cardigan: Sample Sale
Jordache light brown skinny jeans: Walmart
Diba brown boots: DSW

Lori

Pretty in Pink

1.20.151.20.15

It was a balmy 50 degrees here today, so I gave my scarves a break. Bright pink was my color of choice so I added the tank top and necklace. Just made me feel happier all day. Color will do that.

Have a lovely day!

What I wore:
Merona sweater: Target
Merona tank top: Target
Jordache skinny jeans: Walmart
Bandolino black riding boots: DSW
Bubble Necklace: J Crew Outlet
