Checkered Days

2.28.14b

2.28.14a

I promise I won’t talk about the weather today. Even though it’s. Still. Cold. Oh well, it’s supposed to warm up this weekend – at least for a couple of days. I pushed it a little today and ventured out without tights, or even socks. Luckily I didn’t have to be outside for any length of time.

I’ve always liked black and red together and today’s outfit just felt good. The pearls and statement necklace added a little jazz to an otherwise plain outfit and the booties – well I just love them.

What I wore:
Black and White checked shirt: Ross
Merona black cardigan: Target
Mossimo oxblood cropped pants: Target
Nine West black booties: DSW
Red statement necklace: Sample Sale
Pearl strands: Claire’s accessories

Frugally yours,

Lori

I did it again…

2.26.14

What I wore:
Black and white striped t-shirt: H&M
Khaki pants: The LOFT Outlet
Black boyfriend blazer: J Crew Outlet
Scarf: Target
Nine West Cognac pumps: Rack Room Shoes

Frugally yours,

Lori

Symphony of Color

2.28.14

Winter’s last gasp has arrived, and it looks like we’ll have cool weather for a bit longer. I needed layers yet again, so I needed color. Lots of color. When I walked into the office this morning one of my friends said I looked like a “symphony of color” – I like that! Bright colors are what’s gotten me through the dreariest days of winter. Now I’m looking forward to some bright spring colors – hopefully it won’t be too much longer.

What I wore:

Red and White checked flannel shirt: Old Navy
Jordache denim leggings: Walmart
White Stag black vest: Walmart
Black Leather Boots: White House/Black Market
Scarf: Target

Frugally yours,

Lori

Size Matters (or does it?)

2.27.14

2.27.14c

2.27.14

2, 4, 6, 8 – 10, 12, 14+ – What size are you? Women’s clothing sizes are some of the most frustrating “labels” known to mankind. It’s a source of pride or frustration – sometimes all in the same closet. It’s not unusual to have 3 or 4 different sizes of clothes in a wardrobe – and all of them fit! I’ve never understood why women’s clothing designers and manufacturers couldn’t come up with a universal sizing system like there is for men’s clothes.

My husband wears a size 32/34 in men’s slacks and jeans. It doesn’t matter what brand, he can walk into a store and know that size is going to fit.  When I go into a store I have to take at least 2 different sizes (sometimes 3) in order to find one that fits correctly. A small is definitely not a small in every blouse, shirt or sweater. I guess this is why so many women hate shopping for clothes. And don’t even get me started on swimsuits…

One thing I have found helpful is to pinpoint a couple of stores (or designers) that you can become familiar enough with to shop with relative ease. The LOFT is one of my personal favorites. Their clothes are sized pretty accurately across style and type, so I know with relative certainty what size will fit. I still take two different sizes into a dressing room, but I stay pretty consistently within a 2 size range. It does take some time, but it’s definitely worth the effort to get clothes that fit properly.

The pants in today’s outfit are a recent find at The LOFT. I liked them so much I bought them in light grey as well as the khaki color and I’m so glad I did. I tried on two different sizes just to ensure they fit properly and am pleased with the results. They are comfortable without being too slouchy and I can’t wait to create some more outfits with them!

What I wore:
Khaki pants: The LOFT Outlet
White t-shirt: H&M
Rust colored cardigan: H&M
Nine West cognac pumps: Rack Room Shoes
Brown leather belt: Target
Pearl strands: Claire’s Accessories
Gold chains: Charming Charlie, LYDesigns

Frugally yours,

Lori

Discipline!

2.24.14

I’m ready for Spring. Warm days, cool nights, Sunday afternoon drives. And no sweaters. Or boots. Or heavy coats. I know it’s just around the corner, and I have to confess I sometimes push the envelope and wear spring-like clothes on days that are cold. Just because I can.

The blouse in today’s outfit was a find at The LOFT Outlet and I absolutely love it. I love the colors, and it’s lightweight enough that I’ll wear all spring – it will be a great piece for fall as well. I can see pairing it with white pants (if I ever get around to buying some), black cropped pants, grey pants or pencil skirt, with a white blazer or sweater…lots of potential in one blouse!

I find now when I shop I mentally go through my clothes to see how many outfits I could create with whatever piece I’m considering. If it won’t go with at least 4 pieces already in my closet I won’t buy it. I’m trying to be better about sticking to a “1 piece in, 1 piece out” rule, but so far I haven’t done too well. Discipline! Discipline!

What I wore:
Printed blouse: The LOFT Outlet
Jordache denim leggings: Walmart
Merona nude pumps: Target
Necklaces: LYD

Frugally yours,

Lori

Almost Spring

2.25.14

2.24.14 necklace

2.24.14b

Wow, how time flies! I just realized today that I’ve been writing this blog for over a year!! So much has changed in the last year, but one thing has stayed the same: I truly love writing this blog. Writing every day has brought me so much joy – I hope you’ve enjoyed reading!

I figured we’d have a few more days of cool weather, and I was right. You’ve seen this sweater many times over the winter, and honestly I’m weary of winter clothes. I needed a serious “pop of color” today to make up for the cold, so out came the orange print scarf and bubble necklace. It made the day just a bit brighter and definitely improved my mood.

Expect a random selection of outfits over the next week or so. Our crazy weather is entering the roller coaster period of the year so I’ll be breaking out some spring stuff on a warm, sunny day and wearing sweaters and boots the next. Texas – if you don’t like the weather, just wait five minutes and it will change!

What I wore:
Light brown sweater: Old Navy
Merona boyfriend jeans: Target
Scarf: Target
Orange bubble necklace: J Crew Outlet
Nine West booties: DSW

Frugally yours,

Lori

In the PINK

2.21.14

2.21.14 necklace

I find inspiration in so many different places! Clothing store displays, Pinterest, clothing websites – fashion is everywhere! Today’s outfit came straight from Pinterest. The thing I love about recreating outfits is that it doesn’t have to be an exact copy. You can mix things up to use items already in your closet – in this case close is more than good enough! I usually don’t even try to copy an exact look – mainly because I’m not 5’8″ and don’t weigh 110 pounds. I actually have a figure, with wobbly bits and challenges that are uniquely my own. The most important thing about fashion (in my humble opinion) is discovering what works for you. Trends come and go, style is a matter of opinion. Wear what makes you feel good!

What I wore:

Pink cotton 3/4 sleeve sweater: Costco (yes, Costco)
Black and white polka dot shirt: The LOFT
Mossimo black ankle pants: Target
Kelly and Katie black pumps: DSW
Pearl statement necklace: Sample Sale

Frugally yours,

Lori

P.S. The pink sweater was a find at Costco. I bought a navy one first, then a white one. I went back for the pink one after I saw my inspiration photo! One thing I’ve learned about Costco – if you see something you like, BUY IT then. Don’t wait to go back, because their inventory changes almost every day.

Pattern play

2.19.14aSpringtime in Texas. Cool mornings, warm afternoons and cool evenings. I’m a huge fan. Of course, we’ll have a few more cool days, but it’s about time to pack up the sweaters and start the blending of winter and spring clothes. I’m looking forward to the challenge of merging the two wardrobes – this will be fun!

What I wore:
Merona printed cardigan sweater: Target
Grey striped 3/4 sleeve t-shirt: H&M
Jordache light wash denim leggings
Merona grey ballet flats: Target

Frugally yours,

Lori

Ah, Spring

2.20.14

Well hello, Spring! Wow, when Texas decides to warm up it doesn’t mess around. Awesome Husband and I were in Philadelphia this past weekend and the high was 25 on Sunday. I flew home that night and it was 65 degrees when I walked outside. Today the high was 72. Such a wonderful change! We’ll probably have another cold snap between now and mid-March, but for the most part Spring has sprung. Finally!

The striped tunic in today’s outfit was purchased recently at H&M and I love it. So comfortable I actually bought two! I have to admit I almost didn’t buy it (them) because I was concerned it would make me look pregnant (an impossibility, but you know what I mean), or heaven forbid, heavier than I am. Just being honest here.

I think we all worry about how our clothes make us look: hippy, muffin-topped, short, dumpy, you pick. No body is perfect – no matter what you weigh, there will always be things we don’t like or would change. I guess for me, turning 55 meant accepting who I am, how I am at this stage of my life. 2 years ago I lost 30 pounds by changing my diet and exercising. I’ve gained some of it back and it’s definitely harder to lose it now. But I’m back to exercising and eating right so I’m working my way back. Still, I have a muffin top and a few other wobbly bits and I try to camouflage them as best I can with smart clothing choices. A higher rise pant or jean will tame that muffin top, and a slim pant paired with a flowing top can balance out just about any figure. It takes a little trial and error, but it can be done.

What I wore:
Striped cotton tunic sweater: H&M
Skinny cropped pants: GAP Outlet
Merona taupe pumps: Target
Necklaces: Charming Charlie, LYD
Silver earrings: Charming Charlie

Frugally yours,

Lori

Going green

2.18.14

2.18.14 necklace

I think this is one of my favorite colors. It’s not quite green, but not quite teal and it makes me happy. The boat neck is flattering on most silhouettes  and the cotton knit is comfortable to wear all day.

We are on the cusp of Spring in Texas, so I’m working on transitional outfits to share with you soon. Personally, I think the Winter/Spring transition is more difficult than Summer/Fall. I’m hoping to give you some good ideas how to bring Spring into your winter weather clothes. Wish me luck!

What I wore:
Teal Green sweater: New York and Company
Jordache black denim leggings: Walmart
Nine West Booties: DSW
Gold necklaces: LYD Jewelry and Sample Sale

Frugally yours,

Lori
