Casual Saturday

1.30.14

As a continuation of my birthday celebration, AH and I went shopping on Saturday. And he out-shopped me! I was anticipating quite the fashion haul as we headed to a local Outlet Mall, but wow – he bought more for himself than I did! In all fairness, he goes clothes shopping maybe twice a year and was desperately in need of jeans, shoes and belts. It was just a little weird when his Coach shopping bag was heavier than mine! I have to admit though, he looked awfully handsome in his new jeans and shoes for our date that night! It’s nice to have a well-dressed husband!

What I wore:
Black and white striped sweater: H&M
Jordache denim leggings: Walmart
Tahari shoes: DSW
Scarf: Target

Frugally yours,

Lori

Birthday wear

1.29.14

My birthday was last week (what? I’m really 55??) and I believe in extending the celebration for as long as possible. I spent the day shopping (of course), then AH and I went out to dinner and a movie. The celebration extended all the way through the weekend and continues with a much needed getaway very soon.

I had to renew my driver’s license this year and believe it or not, wanted to be sure I looked super cute for my photo! I mean, I have to look at that picture for 4 years, so it should be as cute as possible, right?

What I wore:
Merona bird printed shirt: Target
Merona argyle sweater: Target (On the clearance rack for $5!!)
Jordache denim leggings: Walmart
Bandolino brown riding boots: DSW

Frugally yours,

Lori

Pattern of behavior

1.28.14

1.22.14 patterns

1.22.14 necklace

I haven’t worn these pants in awhile, in all honesty because they’re a little bit of a challenge. I love the pattern, but struggle with what really looks good with them. So I decided just to go for it and throw another pattern mix together and see if it worked. I think it did. Comments?

What I wore:
Striped cotton sweater: Old Navy
White cotton no-iron shirt: Ross
Cropped denim pants: Old Navy
Brown infinity scarf: Sample Sale
Necklace: Sample Sale
Comfort Plus nude heels: Payless

Frugally yours,

Lori

Subtlety

1.27.14

Subtle is the word for today. Yes, I’m still pattern mixing, but the stripe in the navy blue sweater is very understated. I put the camel tank under it hoping to bring the patter out a little, but it didn’t show up in the photo very well. But trust me, it’s there! I tried several different necklace combinations with this outfit and couldn’t find anything I like better than the black and gold. And yes, you can wear black and navy together! If I’d had a pair of dark maroon tights I would have totally worn them, but black works just as well. I received several compliments on this ensemble so I’m counting it a success. What do you think?

What I wore:
Navy striped cotton sweater: The LOFT
Merona camel colored tank: Target
Merona animal print pencil skirt: Target
Nine West black booties: DSW
Necklaces: Coldwater Creek

Lori

And Again…

1.26.14b

This is turning out to be my favorite fashion topic. Pattern mixing. If you’re tired of reading about it, be patient – I’ll move on soon. For now I’m just having fun with different combinations. It’s been a great way to incorporate some underused items into my rotation. And it’s FUN!! I guess it’s the rebel in me, but mixing patterns has been quite liberating. Breaking the rules, flying in the face of conventional fashion ideas (at least the ones I remember from my childhood). My mom is probably rolling her eyes at me from her spot in heaven. But that’s ok. I’m 55 years old now. I can dress the way I want! Within reason…

I chose this particular combination because of the gold in the blue printed shirt. It’s just enough so that the gold stripe really brings it out. Adding the gold chains just helps pull it all together. I haven’t worn these boot cut jeans in awhile – I think I may need to add them more frequently to the rotation.

What I wore:
Floral shirt: Ross
Merona striped cotton sweater: Target
Denizen boot cut jeans: Target
Anne Klein iFlex brown booties: DSW

Lori

Dressing Up

1.23.14

Dressing up can be fun. It can also be a pain in the…well, you know. What’s appropriate? What does “after 5” even mean anymore? What does “dressy casual” mean? We went to a club dinner last weekend and I went through probably 5 different outfits before deciding on this one. It was kind of funny because after choosing this particular ensemble I almost changed clothes right before walking out the door. I was that unsure of myself! Once I got to the dinner I saw everything from cocktail dresses to pant suits – and everything in between. Once again, the common color was black so I was very glad I went with purple. With the black cardigan. Oh, black, you are the great equalizing color.

What I wore:
Sequin tank top: Walmart (yes, Walmart)
Purple knit skirt: The LOFT
Merona purple tights: Target
Merona black cardigan: Target
Nine West black booties: DSW

Frugally yours,

Lori

It goes on…

Pattern mix

And the experiment continues… I’m having so much fun playing with pattern mixing! There are times when I think I’m a little crazy, but I’m enjoying myself, so who cares? As I approach my 55th birthday (what???) I find I’m more adventurous than ever before – at least when it comes to my clothes. Do I wonder if I’m crossing some sort of invisible line sometimes? Absolutely. Do I care? Not really. I know my limits and have a fairly good sense of what’s appropriate for someone “my age”. I’m comfortable in my skin and understand the things I need to avoid accentuating (muffin top, anyone?). Maybe it’s some sort of mid-life crisis, but it doesn’t feel like it. I just feel free to be myself – and that’s a very good thing.

I’ve spent the last two years reinventing myself. I lost 30 pounds (I’ve gained a bit of it back, but I’m working to take it off again!), learned to slalom water-ski, grew out my hair and started writing this blog. The fashion experiment has done more for my self confidence than I ever imagined and I’m so grateful! Thank you for reading. Thank you for commenting. Thank you for encouraging me. I’ll keep writing as long as you keep reading!

What I wore:
Merona dark teal sweater: Target
Brown and white checked flannel shirt: Old Navy
Jordache skinny jeans: Walmart
Merona brown booties: Target
Leopard scarf: Target

Lori

Mixing Patterns, Part Two

1.21.14

1.21.14 shoes

Today’s pattern mixing experiment was exactly that. I honestly didn’t know how I felt about it until I got to work. When the lovely Mrs. K declared it “cute” I honestly breathed a sigh of relief! I thought it looked good, but since I’m still on the fence about pattern mixing it was nice to get an honest opinion from one of my fashion advisors!

Mrs K. pointed out that one reason it works is the common pattern in the shirt and sweater. Both have a diamond design, so it’s a cohesive look without “matching”. The fact that I paired navy and black totally busted that old rule which makes me giggle a little. Two “rules” broken in one outfit? I feel almost a little naughty. Nah, not really. Rule breaking never felt so good!

What I wore:
Blue diamond pattern shirt:
Blue argyle sweater: Target
Black ankle pants: Target
Nine West black booties: DSW
Pearl strands: Claire’s Accessories
Silver ball and rhinestone necklace: Sample sale
Silver chain: LYDesigns

Mixing Patterns: Rule Breaker

1.20.14

Rule breaking is fun. Especially when it happens to be “fashion rules”! How many of you grew up following the following rules:

>No white before Easter or after Labor Day
>You must cut your hair short after age 30
>Don’t mix patterns
>Shoes and bags should always match
>Never wear black with brown or navy
>Never mix metals in jewelry
>Never wear tights with open toed shoes

I could go on, but you get the idea. I can still hear my mom asking if I put on lipstick before leaving the house! I’m so glad the “rules” are breakable now. Especially the one about mixing patterns. I’ve loved seeing different combinations on Pinterest and decided to experiment some myself.

Today I decided to mix a striped sweater with a flower printed shirt. From the compliments I received I’m guessing it was a success. How about you? Have you tried mixing patterns yet? You should!!

What I wore:
Flower print button down shirt: Old Navy
Tan striped cotton sweater: Old Navy
Jordache denim leggings: Walmart
Anne Klein iFlex brown booties: DSW
Mixed gold necklaces: Various

Lori
