Mellow Yellow

8.21.13

I’m a huge fan of wash and wear clothing. No fuss, no ironing, just wash, dry and wear. That’s why this shirt from Coldwater Creek is rapidly becoming a favorite. Aside from the awesome yellow color, it literally repels wrinkles. I wore it all day and it looked just as good at 5:00PM as it did at 7:00AM! It’s comfortable, which is a plus, and looks great dressed up or down. I plan on buying at least one more this season – probably a white long sleeved one that will go with everything.

I love it when outfits are not only easy to wear, but look good too! Sometimes it can be a challenge to strike the perfect balance, and that’s where taking a photo can be a great “second opinion”. Since I’ve been blogging and taking outfit photos every day I’ve gained a new way to look at myself. There are times I’ll take a photo, review and immediately change something about the outfit. Occasionally I’ll change the whole outfit because it just doesn’t work. Photos are also helpful in a store dressing room when you don’t have a friend handy. “Selfies” aren’t just for Facebook and Instagram! Take a photo of the outfit you’re trying on and look at it objectively – it’s a very different experience from just looking in the mirror.

Another thing daily outfit photos has done – it’s helped me realize just how much my hair has grown since February! There are days I think it hasn’t grown at all, then I look back and see just how far I’ve come. I’m not sure how much longer I’ll let it grow but I’m sure enjoying the flexibility I have now.

Thanks for sticking with me as I grow and learn about the art of blogging. It’s been a great 7 months and I can’t wait to see what the future brings!

Ah, Dresses

8.18.13

Ah, dresses. That ever elusive but incredibly useful piece of clothing. Finding the “perfect” dress is, quite frankly, right up there with finding the perfect pair of shoes. Or the perfect handbag. Sometimes it just falls in your lap when you’re not even looking. You didn’t even realize you wanted that dress, pair of shoes or handbag. You just knew. Today’s dress was like that for me.

I love knit dresses, but they can be tricky. Too tight and you look like a sausage. Too loose and you look like you were styled by a tent maker. Pattern or no pattern? Decisions, decisions. I happened onto this particular little gem of a dress at Ross. I wasn’t sure of the pattern at first – I was afraid it would be too much on my petite frame. But when I saw the $15.99 price tag I figured it was worth at least trying on! I think it hits all the right notes – nice color combination, flattering A-line style looks great with a belt and I have several necklaces that will look great with it. I’m even considering adding a black blazer, tights and boots for Fall. Look at me! Taking fashion risks and everything!

Mix it up

8.27.13

Mix it up. Don’t wear the same pieces the same way! Look for alternatives to your normal “uniform”. Add a scarf. A statement necklace or bright color pair of shoes. Today’s outfit started out with just the olive shirt and black pants. That seemed too drab so I added the dark pink tank and leopard shoes. Next came the pink bubble necklace, but when that looked a little to “matchy matchy” I added the gold and black necklace on top. Don’t be afraid to layer necklaces or even scarves. More often than not, the right accessories can take an outfit from so-so to fabulous in just a minute.

If you’re hesitant to try mixing things up, wander on over to my Pinterest boards for inspiration: http://pinterest.com/stylesavvydfw/boards/ Pin things you like and then use those photos the next time you’re stuck in a rut. When I pin an outfit it’s not necessarily the whole outfit I’m looking at. It might be the color or pattern combinations, accessories, shoes or just the overall look that I want to copy. I very rarely try to exactly reproduce an outfit I’ve pinned, I just use them as guidelines. I’ve actually taken my iPad into my closet and put several outfits together from my Pinterest boards!

Converse olive shirt: Target
Merona black ankle pants: Target
Ann Klein leopard pumps: DSW
Hot Pink Bubble Necklace: J Crew Outlet
Gold and black chain necklace: Coldwater Creek

Nothing to wear

8.20.13

Do you ever have one of those days when nothing, and I mean absolutely nothing looks good in your closet? You try on 2, 3 sometimes 4 outfits before you find something to wear. Even outfits that “worked” before just don’t cut it on a day like that. Today was that day for me. I literally changed clothes 3 times before deciding on this outfit. And I had even picked an outfit the night before! Really frustrating.

The white lace tank in today’s outfit was purchased at the LOFT Outlet and I wish I could find it in every color! I couldn’t resist adding the green polka dotted shoes – they just make me happy.

A Different Look

8.14.13

I never thought I would get tired of wearing jeans to work, but it’s happened. When I was working in “corporate America” I had to wear suits or dresses pretty much every day. I enjoy dressing up, but every day gets a little old. I’m grateful for my very casual office and the ability to wear pretty much whatever I want. The challenge is to still look put together in a casual environment. I’ve never felt comfortable in a plain t-shirt and jeans – I guess it’s that corporate mindset still hanging on.

Today I opted for khaki’s and sleeveless denim shirt. Casual, but still what I consider “office appropriate”. If you can wear more casual styles to work, khakis are a great alternative to jeans. I found these at The LOFT Outlet after an extensive search. They’re comfortable and fit really well (and don’t sit too low on my hips!) I’m sure I’ll go back to my jeans soon, but I’m challenging myself to mix it up a little more.

Celebrations

8.16.13

AH (Awesome Husband) and I celebrated our 32nd Wedding Anniversary last week! We had a lovely dinner planned with our best friends, so I was looking forward to wearing a recent consignment store dress. This awesome Ann Taylor dress originally sold for about $160, but I snagged it for just $20 at a local consignment store! Gotta love that!

A girl needs a great LBD (Little Black Dress) and this one definitely fits the description. Black, simple, not fussy with just a little bit of interesting fabric “ruffle” down the front placket. It is easy to wear, didn’t need a lot of jewelry and AH thought I looked beautiful. The red shoes were just the right pop of color, and with my hair pulled back our friends said I looked very “European”. I’ll take that as a compliment.

Do you have an LBD? What is your favorite thing about it?

Pencil Skirts

8.19.13

A pencil skirt is a wonderful, basic and versatile item for any wardrobe. Whether it’s basic black, navy, brown or denim you can dress a skirt up or down depending on your mood or occasion! The skirt in today’s outfit is a Target basic and one I wear quite often. I can (and have) worn this particular skirt year round with everything from tights, boots and sweater in winter to a simple tank top and sandals in summer! The silk top came from the LOFT Outlet last season and up until now had been work with either jeans or khaki cropped pants. I don’t normally tuck it in, so this look is a little different – and I like it! I decided to add the purple sweater even though the purples don’t exactly match. They’re close enough – and besides, I needed something to cover my arms!

A word about nude pumps. Well, more than one, actually. I. Love. Them. They can be worn with practically anything and this pair from Payless is so comfortable it’s like not wearing shoes at all. I looked everywhere and couldn’t find any that were comfortable, not 4 inches tall and, well, you get the idea. I was delighted when I walked into Payless and found not only the shoes – but they were on SALE! Color me happy!

Fall Preview

8.20.13 CC outfit

I recently had the opportunity to visit a local Coldwater Creek store for a sneak peek at their new fall line. It was a great experience! The manager Loretta and the staff at the Preston and Park location in Plano, Texas gave us such a warm welcome! I had the chance to try on some of the newly redesigned jeans and they are great. Coldwater Creek was kind enough to give me a pair of jeans – believe me when I say it was tough to choose just one! I chose the Brocade Ankle Jeans for their fit and style. These jeans feature a natural fit (sits just at the waist), and the slim legs are very flattering. The cropped leg hits just at my ankle because I chose the regular length, not petite. I know I’ll wear them often this fall.

Since this was my first opportunity to do a season preview (and hopefully not the last!) I wasn’t quite sure what to expect. I wasn’t even thinking when I wore my much loved yellow shoes, but they ended up being the perfect accent to the outfit I chose in the store! I love the bright yellow of the shirt – it’s one Coldwater’s awesome No-Iron Perfect shirts that really really is just that – perfect! It washes and dries with no need for ironing.

Coldwater Creek was kind enough to extend an offer to my readers and I hope you’ll take advantage of it! Between now and 8.31.2013 receive $25 off any full price pair of jeans when you use the link: http://www.coldwatercreek.com/shops/jeans-guide.aspx?bpid=192&offercode=FALLB194! Keeping it simple

8.9.13

I don’t wear maxi dresses very often, but when I saw this one on clearance at SOMA recently I snapped it up. It was actually cooler than I thought and just right for a lunch with my beautiful sister. Since there was so much pattern and color in the dress I opted for silver jewelry and navy sandals. Sometimes it’s best just to keep things simple.

Are you wearing maxi dresses this summer?
