Rethink the possibilities

I have to be honest. For a long time I’ve shied away from full skirts because I thought they didn’t look good on me. I would find one I liked (soooo cute on the hangar), but when I tried it on I always felt frumpy. The other day I was reading one of the many fashion blogs I follow and found the inspiration for today’s outfit. It’s really kind of funny – I had seen the bloggers same inspiration photo on Pinterest and immediately dismissed it as “not for me”. I actually saved this skirt out of my daughter’s castaway pile and warred with whether or not to keep it. I initially tried it on without the belt, thought it looked awful and put it back. After seeing the inspiration photo I immediately pulled it back out, ironed it and added the belt. Voila! Super cute, super comfy summer outfit!!

Boyfriend Jeans

Boyfriend jeans. Love them? Hate them? Wear them? I’ve vacillated back and forth about boyfriend jeans for the last year and finally decided I like them. I read a blog about them recently at YouLookFab.com (http://youlookfab.com/2013/05/14/top-picks-boyfriend-jeans/) and got a new perspective on these very popular jeans. I have to admit they are very comfortable in a slouchy sort of way. But are they appropriate for a 50 something woman? I think the answer is YES. I don’t often look to celebrities as a style guide, but I have to say it’s nice to see women in their 40s and 50s rocking boyfriend jeans. Age is a matter of mind. If you don’t mind, it doesn’t matter!

A note about today’s sweater: I bought this amazing wheat colored cotton sweater (I also bought it in blue) on the clearance rack at a LOFT store in Salt Lake City, UT last year. I’d never seen one like it in Texas and couldn’t even find it online. It has become one of my favorite tops because it’s so lightweight and comfortable. I’ve learned over the years no matter where I travel it’s always good to check out my favorite clothing stores! Styles and stock will vary widely depending on the region so you never know what treasures you’ll find!

Today’s outfit:
Wheat cotton sweater: LOFT
White tank: SOMA
Mossimo Skinny Boyfriend jeans: Target
Franco Sarto Nude Sandals: Ross
Gold chain/blue stone heart necklace: Lori Yeary Designs
Gold earrings: Charming Charlie

Mellow Yellow

One color I don’t have a lot of for summer is yellow. Yellows can be tricky since there are so many shades (this is true for all colors, but yellow seems particularly tricky for me!). I tend to gravitate toward more of a gold/yellow, but I love lemon yellow because it’s so cheerful. Color me happy when I found toady’s lace tank top! It’s just the ride shade and oh so comfortable for hot summer days. I found it at CATO, and they had other colors as well so be prepared to see another one pop up in a future outfit!

The necklace in this outfit came from a wholesale place in Dallas, but I’ve seen similar ones at Charming Charlie, Target and Sam Moon Dallas. A good, colorful statement necklace can take a simple tank top and jeans to awesome outfit in less than a minute! The key with statement necklaces is not to overdo it with the earrings. This necklace came with matching earrings, but I thought it was a bit much and opted for the simple gold hoops. Just my personal preference.
Have you bought a statement necklace yet? They don’t have to be expensive – I’ve seen some great ones for under $20!

Today’s outfit:
Yellow lace tank top: CATO
Levis skinny jeans: Urban Outfitters
Aerosoles brown wedge sandals: DSW
Multi-color statement necklace: SuzyQ Dallas

Shop Your Closet

Shopping your closet means looking at what you have and putting aside your preconceived ideas. Looking at your existing wardrobe and asking the question: “If I had never worn this shirt/pants before, what would I pair it with?” Try this experiment. Take two (or three) shirts you wear most often and 2-3 pairs of pants/jeans/shorts or skirts and see how many different outfits you can create. Think outside the box!

The olive green shirt in today’s outfit is a great neutral piece. This is the second time I’ve worn it and I’m already thinking of how to wear it again! It’s lightweight enough for summer, but with a long sleeved t-shirt, skinny jeans and boots will take it into fall as well. It was tempting to pair it with my favorite coral tank top, but I think the hot pink looks good as well for something a little different.

Today’s outfit:
Divided olive shirt: H&M
Merona hot pink tank: Target
Levi’s Skinny Jeans: Urban Outfitters
Aerosoles brown wedge sandals: DSW
Hot Pink Bubble necklace: J Crew Outlet

Wedding Wear

Wedding season is upon us! One of the challenging things about today’s style culture is the changing attitudes toward proper wedding attire. I’ve been to several weddings lately and see everything from men in suits and women in dresses to men in shorts and women in jeans. Depending on the venue, each could be appropriate (I guess), but I tend toward old school when it comes to dressing for a wedding. At an afternoon church wedding recently the fashion/style dividing line seemed to be drawn according to age brackets. Those in the over 60 range came in pretty solidly in the suit/dress camp, while the under 30 crowd fell along the jeans/sundress/flip flop line. Those in their 40s/50s seemed to bridge the gap somewhere in between.
Being more traditional (at least when it comes to church weddings), I opted for a dress and heels. I wore pearls too, but more along the funky/fun line (I call it my “Not Your Mother’s Pearls” collection).

Are you attending weddings this summer? If so, what type of wedding(s) and what are you planning to wear?

Today’s outfit:
Striped knit dress: The LOFT Outlet
Franco nude sandals: Ross
“Bubble” pearl necklace: Lori Yeary Designs
Pearl earrings: Sample Sale

Closet blind

Some days it’s just hard to be excited about getting dressed. Nothing looks good, it feels like I have nothing to wear – yes, I get “closet blind” too! Days like today are when I reach for tried and true pieces that I know work so I don’t have to worry if they look good. Quick, easy and reliable describes the striped t-shirt and olive skinny pants in today’s outfit. Not terribly exciting, but definitely wearable and comfortable. I added the necklace on my way out the door – just because I wanted a pop of color!

Today’s outfit:
Democracy olive pants: Ross
Black and white striped t-shirt: H&M
Aerosoles black wedge sandals: DSW
Yellow statement necklaces: CATO

Frugally yours,
Lori

**Side note: My hair is officially long enough to put it back!! I’ve been growing it out since last June and am really enjoying the flexibility of different styles. You’ll see it up and in a ponytail a lot this summer as I experiment with ways to keep it off my neck!

Style Matters

Women of a certain age often struggle with what is “age appropriate” when it comes to dresses. We want to look sexy, but not overly so. Mature, but not like our mom or grandmother. Fun and flirty but not like a 20-something. Yikes! Finding the ever elusive “perfect dress” is definitely a challenge, but it can be done! Today’s dress is a fun example.

I saw this Evan Picone dress at Ross several months ago. I tried it on, loved it but ultimately put it back. I wasn’t sure how much I would actually wear it and didn’t want to spend $35 right then. A few weeks ago I was searching the Clearance rack at Ross and what did I find? This dress, now marked down to $14.99! Needless to say I nearly squealed with joy and promptly bought it. When my awesome hubby and went dancing recently this dress garnered an appreciative whistle and compliment from him that made me very happy!

All Red

Have you ventured into the land of color? I have a couple pairs of colored skinny pants and I’m having fun playing with combinations. Take today’s outfit for example. I bought these red skinny crops at Kohl’s last fall and wore them a couple of times with sweaters and boots. I had actually put them in my off season closet for the summer, but pulled them out on a whim. After a few false starts, I’ve created at least 4 different outfits with the pants and expanded my summer choices significantly!

I guess my point is this: just because you wear something for a particular season doesn’t you can’t reinvent it for the current season. Reinvention is one way to keep your outfits interesting without having to buy as many new things every time the season changes. With finances being tight for pretty much everyone these days, necessity is (to update an old quote) the mother of RE-invention!

Today’s outfit:
Sonoma red cropped jeans: Kohl’s
Mossimo Chambray sleeveless top: Target
American Eagle wedges: Payless Shoe Source
Gold leather belt: Target

Casual Friday

Casual is the order of the day on Fridays. It’s my day off from my “real” job, so it’s always filled with errands I don’t have time for any other day. This past Friday I had a long list which included taking some clothes to a local resale shop (Hello, Lovely Ladies at Closet Revival in Plano!), returning some wedding supplies, grocery shopping and lunch with a friend. Whew! Comfortable was the next priority with all that running around so I opted for simplicity. The knit shirt gave me enough breathing room for the “power surges” I’ve started experiencing and the boyfriend jeans – well let’s face it, they’re just plain comfortable. I could have chosen a bit more comfortable sandal, but I hadn’t worn this pair yet this year and wanted to try them out.

What is your “go to” item when you want to be casual and comfortable but still cute?

Today’s outfit:
Orange knit peasant top: Old Navy
Merona Boyfriend jeans: Target
Brown wedge sandals: DSW
Wooden bracelets: Raven & Lily (www.ravenandlily.com)
Frugally yours,
Lori

P.S.
A word about the awesome wooden bracelets in today’s outfit – I purchased them recently at a conference and love the story behind their creation! From their website:
Raven + Lily is a socially responsible brand dedicated to empowering women through design partnerships and sustainable economic opportunities.

These bracelets are handmade from locally sourced woods and metallic leathers by marginalized women in Northern India. Proceeds from this collection go to fund literacy programs for the women artisans and their children in the community.

Minty Fresh

Minty fresh. That’s how someone described my outfit this morning. Not sure if they meant in a toothpastey kind of way or not, but I’ll take it. All I know is this particular combination popped into my head last night and I went with it. I haven’t worn this top before and I’m now wondering why! It’s so comfortable and easy to wear I’ll definitely be looking for more ways to wear it. An added bonus is the gathers at the waist and faux wrap hide my tummy!

When I started this blog I had a secret goal not to repeat any outfits for as long as possible. Looking back at posts since I first wrote in February I see that I’ve succeeded! I’ve repeated pieces, but not outfits and that’s quite an accomplishment!

I’ve been rebuilding my wardrobe since losing 30 pounds last year (you can read about my journey here: https://thisjoyfuljourney.wordpress.com/determination) and it’s been a rewarding yet frustration proposition. Going from a size 12 to a size 2 has presented some unique challenges – one of which has been learning how to dress my new, thinner body at the young age of 54. It’s been interesting to hear people say they never knew I was overweight – I was pretty good at camouflage. I understood the challenges of my body type and dressed accordingly. I know how to hide a tummy, minimize a larger bust and accentuate the good stuff. I wish I had more photos of myself back then, but I was a little camera shy. Oh well.

Learning to embrace your body type and understand the best way to dress can be a challenge. I’ll be talking about some of the most common issues in the weeks to come. If you have something in particular you’d like me to write about, let me know! I’d love to hear your thoughts!

Today’s outfit:
Black knit wrap top: Ann Taylor
Merona mint skinny pants: Target
Comfort Plus black pumps: Payless Shoe Source
Silver earrings: Charming Charlie
